New Brooklyn Dispensary Opens in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg District
When it comes to Brooklyn Dispensary, New York City is taking the lead. In the months since legal cannabis first became available in the state, Mayor Eric Adams has taken a hardline approach to cracking down on illegal “smoke shops” that sell marijuana, cannabis-infused edibles and tobacco products. The City is using every tool at its disposal and has already imposed more than $90 million in fines.
One of those tools is the City’s Joint Compliance Task Force, a team dedicated to working with local law enforcement to conduct inspections and shut down illegal smoke shops around the five boroughs. In Brooklyn, the team has inspected more than 100 stores and issued nearly $20 million in fines since its launch last November.
The Best Brooklyn Dispensary for Quality Cannabis
In addition to cracking down on illegal smoke shops, the Adams administration is taking steps to ensure that Brooklyn residents have access to safe and quality-controlled cannabis products. The city’s Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) has made it a priority to award half of all dispensary licenses to “social and economic equity applicants” from communities that were negatively impacted by prohibition.
One of the new dispensaries opening this month is Brooklyn’s first Black woman-owned legal cannabis shop, Matawana. Located in upscale Williamsburg, the store is stocked with marijuana flower, pre-rolls, edibles and oils as well as hemp-derived CBD products that don’t require medical cards to buy (and make for great gifts). The owner says she’s proud to be able to hire young people and give them a living wage while also offering a product they love to consume.
